Transhumanism and atheism - natural allies
An article about the common ground between the atheist movement and transhumanism. I've been hanging out on the RichardDawkins.net forums, and this is a crosspost.

Let me know if you have any ideas on , because I think it's important stuff!

Similarities between Singularitarianism and religion has been discussed before [1][2][3], but I guess you're actually proposing that it should be promoted and marketed as a religion. My view is that transhumanism will look and feel like a religion, but I wouldn't recommend it be promoted as such. Otherwise, it might lose it's scientific objectivity. With time, though, more and more people will start to see the effects of accelerating change and will start looking for explanations and solutions.

To me, transhumanism projects a contrast with both dualism and old-style materialism. The idea "people are meat" can be seen as a mistake, by envisaging people being copied off the meat and into silicon. So it becomes evident that people are information under computation. Given that information and computation are quite fundamental ideas in modern physics, I find this a much more interesting situation than "souls".

It seems to me that we have the beginnings here of what might be called a "true religion" - an accurate understanding of our nature and our transcendent potential.

I've responded to Julian's Comment in the comments section on my blog, which is at http://transhumangoodness.blogspot.com/2008/02/transhumanism-and-atheism-natural.html

hmm I'm imagining the standard venn diagram w/ atheist as one group and tranhumanist as the other, now clearly there are people who are both now as for the difference b/w an atheist only person and a transhumanist only person I'd say an atheist + desire to improve human condition + knowledge of tech. acceleration -> (leads to) a transhumanist so that would mean that an atheist would need to want to improve things and also know that it is feasible in the near term.

conversely, a transhumanist only person need only to believe that a human-created utopia is more likely/pratical/beneficial-to-all than than the afterlife described by religions
