People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants to pay a million dollars for fake meat — even if it has caused a “near civil war” within the organization.

Probably unlikely to be won within the specified time frame because they're not asking for a proof of concept, like previous X-Prizes, but instead they're asking for a product that is commercially available, competitively priced, and tastes like chicken.

From PETA web site: [1]
• Produce an in vitro chicken-meat product that has a taste and texture indistinguishable from real chicken flesh to non-meat-eaters and meat-eaters alike.
• Manufacture the approved product in large enough quantities to be sold commercially, and successfully sell it at a competitive price in at least 10 states.

thanks for pointing that out Wal.
It makes the prize meaningless as $1 million is how much fried chicken the KFC chain sells in about 5 minutes. The chicken industry in the USA sells $50 billion/year. KFC $12.2 billion/year. So that is not including Popeyes, and the other chains.

Even a single KFC store can sell $1 million in chicken each year. If someone has what it takes to win the prize then they have already made a huge sale to KFC and the other restaurants.
