Protein Folding as a Game
A new game, named Foldit, turns protein folding into a competitive sport. Introductory levels teach the rules, which are the same laws of physics by which protein strands curl and twist into 3D shapes -- key for biological mysteries ranging from Alzheimer's to vaccines.

Reminds me of folding@home! My team is doing its best to make the world a better place with our excess computational power.

I did the same. Then I switched to the "world community grid". They're now very close to having 1 million computer in their grid.

This is a nice "human computation" idea. People put great energy and enthusiasm into playing games - especially if they're competitive - and if even a small fraction of that could be harnessed to do useful work great things could result.
